Diabetic eye examination
Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels in the retina (diabetic retinopathy). At first you notice nothing, while this is exactly when it can be treated well. That is why regular eye checks are part of diabetes care. We take retinal photos and, if necessary, an OCT scan, and send the report to your GP or practice nurse.
The examination is fully covered and does not affect your deductible.

How often is a check-up needed?
According to the Dutch GP guideline: shortly after diagnosis and then, by agreement, every one to three years, depending on the results and on how well your blood sugar and blood pressure are controlled. Your GP or practice nurse usually schedules this with you.
What do we examine?
- retinal photos of both eyes, usually after dilating the pupils
- an OCT scan of the macula if fluid build-up is suspected
- visual acuity
- if necessary, the eye pressure and the lens; cataract is more common with diabetes
What happens with the results?
We grade the results according to the national agreements and send the report to your GP. If treatment is needed, we refer you directly to an ophthalmologist. We keep your GP informed.
What should you bring?
Your ID, your glasses, an up-to-date list of your medication and, if you have it, your most recent HbA1c value.
Please note: you may be given eye drops. During this examination we may dilate your pupils with eye drops. Your vision will then be blurred for a few hours and you will be sensitive to light. You may not drive back yourself: arrange transport or come with someone who can drive for you. Bring sunglasses.

Referral and insurance
We like to work together with your GP, so please ask for a referral; GPs refer easily via ZorgDomein. The examination is fully covered and does not affect your deductible. Afterwards your GP receives a report.
