Cataract and retina examination
Is your vision slowly getting blurrier, do you see more glare in bright light, or do you notice flashes of light and floaters? Then we look at the lens and the retina. Cataract is a clouding of the lens and can be treated well; retinal complaints sometimes require prompt action.
The examination is fully covered and does not affect your deductible.

Is your vision slowly getting blurrier, do you see more glare in bright light, or do you notice flashes of light and floaters? Then we look at the lens and the retina. Cataract is a clouding of the lens and can be treated well; retinal complaints sometimes require prompt action.

When is this examination advisable?
- gradually blurrier vision that does not improve with new glasses
- more trouble with glare, halos around lights or reduced contrast
- checking the macula in case of distorted vision or macular degeneration in the family
- floaters that have developed gradually
Please note: with sudden flashes of light, a “curtain” in your vision or a swarm of new floaters, call your GP or the out-of-hours GP service straight away. This may be a retinal detachment and needs urgent care.
What do we examine?
- the lens with the slit lamp, after dilating the pupils
- the retina, the macula and the optic nerve
- an OCT scan and fundus photo to record and monitor abnormalities
What if there is cataract?
Cataract does not always need to be treated straight away. We assess how much the clouding limits your vision and discuss with you when the right moment is. If surgery is appropriate, we refer you directly to an ophthalmologist. We keep your GP informed.
What should you bring?
Your ID, your glasses, an up-to-date list of your medication and sunglasses.
Please note: you may be given eye drops. During this examination we may dilate your pupils with eye drops. Your vision will then be blurred for a few hours and you will be sensitive to light. You may not drive back yourself: arrange transport or come with someone who can drive for you. Bring sunglasses.

Referral and insurance
We like to work together with your GP, so please ask for a referral; GPs refer easily via ZorgDomein. The examination is fully covered and does not affect your deductible. Afterwards your GP receives a report.
