Eye test for children
Children can focus very strongly. As a result, a refractive error can easily be masked in a standard test and everything seems fine, while your child does have complaints. We test children from the age of 8 with attention to this focusing ability, if necessary with drops that temporarily relax focusing.

When should you have your child’s eyes examined?
- difficulty reading, letters that move, easily distracted during schoolwork
- headaches at the end of the school day
- squinting, sitting close to the screen, closing one eye
- a noticeable squint, or squint in the family
- advice from the school, youth health doctor or GP
What do we examine?
- visual acuity and prescription, if necessary after relaxing accommodation
- how both eyes work together and depth perception
- the health of the eye
Practical information
Allow about 45 minutes. We refer children under 8 via the GP to an orthoptist.
What should you bring?
Your child’s ID or health insurance card, their current glasses and, if applicable, a letter from the school or youth health doctor.
Please note: your child may be given eye drops. Your child’s vision will then be blurred for a few hours and they will be sensitive to light; do not plan a test or sports that afternoon. Bring sunglasses or a cap for your child.

Referral and insurance
We like to work together with your GP, so please ask for a referral; GPs refer easily via ZorgDomein. The examination is fully covered. Afterwards your GP receives a report.
