Binocular vision examination
Do you see sharply but still suffer from tired eyes, headaches when reading or trouble keeping your place on the line? Then the way your eyes work together may play a role. In a binocular vision examination we look at how your eyes cooperate when reading and working on a screen: eye position, focusing and keeping the image clear together.
This is a basic examination by the optometrist. For more extensive assessment and treatment of eye alignment problems we work together with the orthoptist.
The examination is fully reimbursed and does not affect your own risk (eigen risico).

Who is it for?
- adults with reading or screen complaints, tired eyes or headaches
- children from the age of 8 who find reading difficult or tire quickly during schoolwork
- people whose complaints do not go away with new glasses
What do we examine?
- the eye position and eye movements
- how both eyes work together (fusion) and depth perception
- the focusing ability (accommodation) and the reading distance
- a possible hidden eye alignment problem
When the orthoptist is the better place for you
Our examination is a basic one. The orthoptist specialises in eye alignment and eye cooperation and can examine and treat more. For these complaints we therefore refer you on:
- children under the age of 8
- squint (strabismus) or a lazy eye (amblyopia)
- double vision, certainly if it started recently
- vision complaints after a stroke or other brain injury
- determining and adjusting a prism correction
If we see something like this during the examination, we discuss referral to the orthoptist or the ophthalmologist with your GP. Did double vision start suddenly? Then contact your GP or the out-of-hours GP service the same day.
What can you expect?
After the examination we discuss what we have seen. Sometimes adjusted glasses or reading glasses are enough, sometimes we advise simple exercises, and sometimes further examination by the orthoptist or ophthalmologist is needed. Your GP receives a report.
What should you bring?
Your ID, your current glasses or lenses and an up-to-date list of your medication. Allow about 45 minutes.
Please note: you may be given eye drops. Especially in children we may widen the pupils with eye drops. Afterwards your vision is blurred for a few hours and you are sensitive to light. You may not drive back yourself: arrange transport or come with someone who drives for you. Bring sunglasses.

Referral and insurance
We like to work together with your GP, so please ask for a referral; GPs refer easily via ZorgDomein. The examination is fully covered and does not affect your deductible. Afterwards your GP receives a report.
