Eye conditions

ConjunctivitisA red, irritated eye. Usually caused by a virus and usually clears up by itself.
Dry eyesToo little tear fluid, or tears that evaporate too quickly. Often, surprisingly, watery eyes.
Vitreous detachment and floatersFloating spots and sometimes flashes of light. Often harmless, but have it checked once.
GlaucomaDamage to the optic nerve, often due to high eye pressure. You usually notice it late.
Macular degeneration (AMD)Damage to the macula: the part of your retina you use for sharp vision.
Retinal detachmentThe retina comes loose from the inner wall of the eye. This is an emergency.
BlepharitisBlocked glands in the eyelid margin. Persistent, but well controlled with daily care.
CataractThe lens of the eye becomes cloudy, so your vision gradually gets less sharp.
Stye and chalazionAn inflamed gland in the eyelid margin. Annoying, but almost always harmless.
Diabetic retinopathyDamage to the small blood vessels in the retina due to diabetes. Often noticed late.
Hypertensive retinopathyChanges in the blood vessels of the retina caused by high blood pressure.
KeratoconusThe cornea becomes thinner and bulges into a cone, so vision turns blurred and distorted.
