What is the difference between an optician, an optometrist, an orthoptist and an ophthalmologist?
An optician measures your prescription and supplies glasses and lenses. An optometrist has allied health training (bachelor’s level) and assesses the health of the eye: retina, optic nerve, eye pressure and the front of the eye. An orthoptist specialises in how the eyes work together and in squint, especially in children. An ophthalmologist is a medical specialist who treats eye diseases, including surgically. Is the examination covered by insurance?
Yes. Optometric examinations are fully covered and do not affect your deductible. The exception is the CBR eye test: it costs € 134 and is not covered by basic insurance. See also Rates and insurance.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
We like to work together with your GP and therefore ask you to see your GP first. Your GP refers you easily via ZorgDomein. That way your GP is informed from the start and we can send the report to the right place afterwards.
How long does an examination take?
An eye health check takes about 45 minutes. For a CBR eye test allow about half an hour, longer with a visual field test. Always bring your glasses and/or contact lenses for the CBR test.
Can I drive after the examination?
During any of our examinations your pupils may be dilated with eye drops. Your vision will then be blurrier for a few hours and you will be sensitive to light. You may not drive back yourself: come with someone who can drive for you or by public transport, and bring sunglasses.
What should I bring?
Your ID, your glasses or contact lenses, an up-to-date list of your medication and, if you have it, your GP’s referral. For a CBR test also the letter or code from the CBR.
Can my child come to you?
Yes, from age 8. Read more about the eye test for children. We refer younger children via the GP to an orthoptist.
Do you also do the CBR eye test?
Yes, in Nijmegen, Gorinchem and Zwolle. The examination is carried out by the optometrist; an ophthalmologist from Okulus assesses and signs the report. The Esterman visual field test we only carry out in Nijmegen.
How quickly can I be seen?
We work without a waiting list. Contact us and we will schedule an appointment at short notice at the location that suits you best: Nijmegen, Gorinchem or Zwolle.
What if I can’t make my appointment?
Let us know at least 24 hours in advance, so that we can give the slot to someone else.
