Esterman visual field test for the CBR

What is an Esterman visual field test?

The Esterman test measures your visual field with both eyes at once: how much you see around you without moving your head or eyes. That binocular view is exactly what you need in traffic. You look at a fixed point and press a button when you see a light. The test is not demanding and does not hurt.

When does the CBR ask for it?

• with glaucoma;
• with a retinal condition;
• with visual field loss after a stroke or brain injury;
• when there is doubt about the width of your visual field.

The CBR tests the result against the Dutch fitness regulations, which set the requirements for acuity and visual field, among others.

How does the test work?

1. First fill in the Health Declaration with the CBR. The CBR tells you which examination is needed.
2. Make an appointment at our Nijmegen location and bring the letter or code from the CBR.
3. We first measure your visual acuity.
4. Then the Esterman test follows with both eyes at once. Concentration matters, so we take our time.
5. An ophthalmologist assesses the results and signs the report.

Groenestraat 294, 6531 JC Nijmegen, in the BCG business centre. Report to reception; the optometrist will collect you there.

What should you bring?

Your ID, glasses or contact lenses, a current medication list and the letter or code from the CBR.

Please note: you may be given eye drops. During this examination we may dilate your pupils with eye drops. Your vision will then be blurred for a few hours and you will be sensitive to light. You may not drive back yourself: arrange transport or come with someone who can drive for you. Bring sunglasses.

Only in Nijmegen

We only do the Esterman test in Nijmegen. A regular CBR eye test is also available in Gorinchem and Zwolle.
